Whale shark

Marine LifeBest time: Summer

In the warm months the big visitors arrive, and none is bigger than the whale shark, the largest fish in the sea and a gentle filter feeder that cruises the warm water offshore. Swimming near one is an experience that stays with people for life.

When and where to see them

Whale sharks visit in the warm months. Ocean safaris go looking for them offshore, and divers on the reefs are occasionally treated to a fly-past. Sightings are wild and never guaranteed, which is exactly what makes them worth it.
