Loggerhead turtle
From late November to March, loggerhead turtles crawl out of the surf at night to lay their eggs above the tideline, some having crossed whole oceans to nest on the very beach where they hatched. Later in the season the hatchlings make their frantic dash for the water.
Sodwana’s beaches are among the most important turtle-nesting grounds on the continent. The rules are strict and worth it: no lights, no flash and no touching, so that she can finish what she came to do.
When and where to see them
Loggerheads nest at night on the beaches around Sodwana between late November and March, and the only way to witness it is on a guided turtle tour with a licensed guide. Later in the season, keep an eye on the tideline at dawn for the tracks of hatchlings that made their dash in the night.
